& Juliet is a coming-of-age jukebox musical based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The show follows Juliet in an alternate ending of the play, deciding not to end it all over Romeo but instead travelling to Paris to discover her true self. The score features the music of Swedish record producer Max Martin, including “I Want It That Way,” “Roar,” and “...Baby One More Time.” The show premiered at the Manchester Opera House in 2019 before transferring to the West End later that year. A Broadway production of the show debuted in 2022 and was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

History with the Macy's Parade[]

& Juliet was one of the five Broadway musicals to perform for NBC’s coverage of the 2023 Parade. The show’s company performed a rendition of Demi Lovato’s “Confident,” in which Juliet and her love interest, François, bond over similar experiences of having their lives stifled by their families.

The musical number was a restaged version of its on-stage counterpart. Choreographer Jennifer Weber explained the challenge of translating the performance from stage to screen, and “Imagining the camera doing what is usually achieved on stage with large set pieces and turntable moves.”[1]

Cast member Megan Kane, who plays Lucy in the show, hosted an Instagram takeover of the @andjulietbway Instagram account on Parade Day, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the performance.
