Red is the main protagonist of the Angry Birds franchise created by Rovio Entertainment. He was introduced in 2009 as the icon of the original game and a core member of the original flock, as well as the leader. Red is usually the first bird introduced in the Angry Birds games, though there have been times where other characters were in his place (especially in spinoffs) After his first appearance in Poached Eggs, he has become a prominent character for the series.

Red appears in The Angry Birds Movie as the starring character and is voiced by Jason Sudeikis. He is introduced as an isolated, lonely bird and the movie follows his journey to redemption as an at first angry, aggressive bird to a loved, happy companion to those around him.

History with the Macy's Parade[]

Red made his Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade debut in the 2015 Parade, migrating down Manhattan to join the flock of giant helium balloons. The balloon was made to promote the then-upcoming Angry Birds Movie, which was set to release in the spring of 2016.

The Red balloon is posed in a mid stride dash clutching his precious egg like a football during a Thanksgiving Day game. Standing at approximately 45.5-feet wide, 29.7-feet long and 44-feet long; with the biggest eyebrows in all of Manhattan at 7-feet wide, in his trademark scowl, Red is one giant angry bird, ready to take the challenge of a holiday excursion to the Big Apple.

“Angry Birds is a worldwide phenomenon and we are thrilled to have Red join the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon line-up this year, taking his place among some of the world’s most popular and recognizable characters,” said Parade director Amy Kule of the balloon’s debut.

Red returned to the famed holiday procession in 2016, touting the home media release of The Angry Birds Move, and once again in the 2017 Macy’s Parade, promoting The Angry Birds Movie 2, set to release in summer 2019 and the web-series, Angry Birds Blue. Following the latter appearance, the Angry Birds’ Red balloon was retired from the lineup.

Since its retirement, the Red balloon has been used at multiple balloon field training sessions. He first appeared in a June 2018 test flight alongside Artie the Pirate, and once again in September of that year with the Blue Americana Sphere and Kit the Elf. Then in September 2021, flying alongside an Opening Macy’s Star and the Blue Americana Sphere. Red made his most recent test flight in September 2023, alongside a Yellow Macy's Star.

Trivia[]
