The Artist Clowns are a group of clowns from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

History with the Macy's Parade

In 2004, Delta Air Lines and Macy's collaborated together to create a Design-A-Balloon contest, where children from all around the country would create their own balloon in hopes of it being balloon-ified in the 2004 Parade. The lucky winner was Alexandra Mora's Turkey of World Peace balloon.

To help commemorate this special event, a new group of clowns, known as the Studio Art Clowns, were set to make their Parade debut in that year's Parade. The group features young teens in typical artist apparel, including a French beret and a bucket full of confetti. In 2015, the clown group's name was changed to simply the "Artist Clowns".

The clown group will not return to the 2020 Parade, as restrictions put in place in response to the ongoing 2019-20 coronavirus pandemic, do to not permit any Parade participant to be under 18 years of age.

  • In 2018, the Artist Clowns, alongside the Baseball All-Stars and the costumed escorts riding on the floats, were not seen in the Parade Route, presumably due to the frigid temperatures, and were only present at Herald Square.
