The Cat refers to two giant balloons that appeared in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
History in the Parade[]
The Cat made its parade debut for the 1931 parade. There were two balloons made; one made by Goodyear (referred to as the “Goodyear Cat”) and one made by Tony Sarg, that followed the Goodyear Cat balloon down the route.
When the parade was over, the two Cat balloons were released into the air. However, the Goodyear Cat hit a telephone pole and got caught on fire, whereas the Tony Sarg Cat was found lost at sea by November 28.[1] Both balloons were retired following their only appearances. While the Goodyear balloon was left burnt following the accident, the Sarg balloon was disposed of.
Trivia[]
