`Clifford the Big Red Dog is the main character of his eponymous children's book series, introduced in 1963 by writer Norman Bridwell. He went on to establish Scholastic as a premier publishing company and become its official mascot. He also became well-known for starring in an animated TV series on PBS, where he was voiced by John Ritter. Clifford is a timid and clumsy, yet friendly and well-meaning, giant Labrador retriever with red fur who lives on an island with his owner, an 8-year-old girl named Emily Elizabeth, and a number of human and canine friends.

History with the Macy's Parade

Clifford is one of the longest-running balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. He first appeared as a balloon in 1990, where he led the parade and was retired in 1996. Then he returned to the parade for a second run, from 2000 to 2004, to promote his TV show which was airing on PBS during that same timespan.

As a Walkaround

Clifford first appeared in the parade in 1987, not as a Balloon but a walk around Mascot it lasted until the Balloon's Debut in 1990, He was also on the Hat Off To Our Heritage Float in the 2011 parade along with other characters that have been retired
