History with the Macy's Parade[]
Coach made its Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade debut in 2019, presenting an all-new float and marking the first time a luxury fashion brand had participated in the event. The float, titled “Rexy in the City,” features the brand’s dinosaur mascot, Rexy, pulling a glittering stagecoach through a carnival-style reimagining of New York City. The towering, two-story tall figure of Rexy seen on the float is the largest physical representation of the character; the second largest can be seen at Coach’s flagship 5th Avenue store.[1]
The Rexy in the City float took ten months to create, from the first concepts to the completed structure, with Coach and the Macy’s Parade Studio working closely to ensure that the float would reflect the company’s unique spirit of optimism, playfulness, and exclusivity.[1] Susan Tercero, at-the-time parade executive, said the float brought “a new level of whimsy” to the Parade lineup.[2]
The introduction of the Coach float also marked the first time on-board computers were used to control the animation featured on the float, which allowed the coach to spin its wheels, as well as allowing the Rexy figure to move its head and wag its tail.
A Coach capsule collection was released to coincide with the float’s debut, featuring its leather tote and belt bag as well as the Sadie crossbody, with a glittery rainbow update. Additionally, t-shirts and footwear were sold, which carried the Rexy and Carriage motif, a playful, contemporary take on Coach’s iconic horse-and-carriage logo.[2]
The Rexy in the City float went on to make reprise appearances in the reimagined 2020 Parade, and once again in 2021. Following the float's retirement, it was dismantled and disposed of, with only a wheel of the carriage being saved.
