Cool Cats are an NFT collection and the brainchild of Colin "Clon" Egan, a creative visionary with a lifelong passion for character design. Egan's journey began as the "Catoonist," where he subtly incorporated cats into his artwork. This connection to cats eventually led to the creation of an Instagram page dedicated to bringing his beloved character, Blue Cat, to life in 2015.

Blue Cat underwent a remarkable transformation in 2021 when Clon ventured into the world of web3. He introduced Blue Cat and a host of other quirky characters as part of the groundbreaking digital collection known as "Cool Cats."

Cool Cats are a captivating collection of randomly-generated art residing on the Ethereum blockchain. The first generation comprises a whopping 9,999 distinct Blue Cats, each crafted from a pool of over 300,000 possible combinations. These Cool Cats sport an array of outfits, expressions, and colors, making each one unique. In fact, every Cool Cat boasts a distinctive body, hat, face, and outfit, ensuring that no two are alike.

History with the Macy's Parade[]

Cool Cats made its Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade debut in 2023 as its mascot, Blue Cat, and his best friend Chugs assumed the form of the first-ever NFT Parade balloon. The digital collection won a fan vote with 69,175 votes[1] against four other NFT projects—BossBeauties, gmoney, SupDucks, and VeeFriends—held in conjunction with a virtual web3 Parade experience in the metaverse.

The Blue Cat & Chugs balloon—at 34 feet tall, 36 feet long, and 27 feet wide—was designed in collaboration with the Cool Cats team[2] and featured Blue Cat with his best friend Chugs the milk carton. After being built by Macy’s Studios, brand representatives from Cool Cats helped fly the balloon during its first indoor test flight at the Prudential Center in New Jersey.[3]

Leading up to the Parade, several activations were held across Cool Cats’ social media accounts and in New York City. One such activation was a contest on the Cool Cats Instagram account in which fans would help Chugs reunite with Blue Cat after the two were separated in Manhattan. Entrants were required to post a “creative and eye-catching” picture of the Blue Cat balloon during the Parade to their Instagram Story for a chance to win a $10,000 grand prize.[4]

Other promotions held during the week of the Parade included an IRL scavenger hunt with clues to finding Blue Cat, a special Friendsgiving Dinner for the family and friends of the Cool Cats team,[5] and exclusive Cool Cats merchandise at 11 Macy’s flagship stores, including a limited-edition “Color Me Cool” figurine given to Macy’s American Express Cardholders. Edgar was also on hand to assist 34 other balloon handlers (all of whom wore matching Chugs outfits) with flying the balloon on Thanksgiving morning.
