The Elephant Clowns, previously known as the Mighty Elephant Clowns, are unit of clowns from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
History with the Macy's Parade[]
The Mighty Elephant Clowns made their debut in the 1994 Parade, thundering down the Parade route with a variety of other circus-inspired elements. The group of ten parading pachyderms was led by their ringmaster clown captain, who helped bring a trunkload of fun to the streets of New York City. The design of the clown costumes feature an oversized foam elephant head with a hula-hoop clown suit, giving the effect of a rotund elephant.
By the 2000's the clown unit had been shortened to simply the "Elephant Clowns," and were also occasionally joined by the Circus Clowns. In 2002 and 2003, the clowns accompanied the Planters Nut Mobile en route to 34th Street. Following the latter, the clown unit was permanently retired from the lineup.
