The Alphabet is a Latin alphabet consisting of 26 letters, each having an upper and lower-case form. It originated around the 7th century from the Latin script. Since then, letters have been added or removed to give the current Modern English alphabet of 26 letters (the same as in the ISO basic Latin alphabet). The word alphabet is a compound of first two letters of the Greek alphabet, alpha and beta.

History with the Macy's Parade[]

In 1940, the Parade director, Tony Sarg, chose the theme of that year's Parade to be centered around the English alphabet. The Parade's 26 units would be based on the 26 letters of the aforementioned alphabet and would each feature one toy float featuring the unit's respective letter.

The alphabet theme was retired from the Parade after the 1940 procession, and the letter toy floats were disposed of shortly after their maiden appearance.
