Goofy is a cartoon character created in 1932 at Walt Disney Productions. Goofy is a tall, Cainis Goofus with a Southern drawl, and typically wears a turtle neck and vest, with pants, shoes, white gloves, and a tall, green hat originally designed as a rumpled fedora. Goofy is a close friend of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck and is one of Disney's most recognizable characters. He is normally characterized as extremely clumsy and dim-witted, yet this interpretation is not always definitive; occasionally Goofy is shown as intuitive, and clever, albeit in his own unique, eccentric way.

History with the Macy's Parade[]

Costumed Character (1968-1977, 1980-1981, 1984-1985)[]

Goofy made his Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade debut in 1968, as a walk around character on the Mickey Mouse's 40th Birthday Celebration float, made to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the famous Mouse.

From the 1969 Parade until the 1975, Goofy appeared on the Disney Wagon, normally appearing with the walk-around Mickey Mouse and Pluto.

In the 1976 Parade, he and Pluto moved to the Castle float, appearing alongside fellow mutt The Shaggy Dog. In the 1977 Parade, Mickey and Minnie joined him and Pluto. Goofy soon missed out on the next two parades, but returned alongside Mickey in 1980, and appeared once more with several other Disney characters on the Tencennial Celebration float in 1981.

Goofy would miss out on the 1982 and 1983 Parades, but returned once again in 1984 to 1985 on the Disneyland Celebration float, a float made in honor of the beloved theme park's 30th anniversary, appearing alongside his other Sensational Six friends.

Balloon (1992)[]

Seven years after that, Goofy would return to the Parade, rising to the occasion as a giant helium balloon, to celebrate the character's 60th birthday and the promotion of the Goof Troop TV Show, which began airing on September 5th of that same year. The balloon was designed by famous balloon designer Manfred Bass, and depicts the lovable canine goofus as Santa Claus, albeit in a tangled situation in a wreath and Christmas lights. That same year, Goofy was chosen to be the 1992 Macy's Holiday Ambassador, and plush toy versions of Goofy were sold at Macy's stores nationwide. After a successful test flight in mid-November 1992, he would take to New York's Thanksgiving celebration as the ninth balloon in the lineup.

After the 1992 Parade, Goofy would appear again at the Macy's New York Christmas at Disney MGM Studios at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Here, the balloon was perched atop the former Streets of America buildings alongside balloon versions of Betty Boop, Snuggle, Kermit the Frog and the then new Humpty Dumpty falloon and many other assorted novelty balloons. After this event, he was retired altogether and shipped back to the Macy's Parade Studio, and later the Macy's Float Warehouse.

Costumed Character (2005, 2021-Present)[]

Although the balloon has not been seen since 1992, he continues to make infrequent appearances in walkaround form. He appeared on the Ship of Dreams float in the 2005, honoring the 50th anniversary of the Disneyland Resort, and has made appearances on the Magic Meets the Sea float since the 2021 Parade utilizing his articulated head form. He gained a bit of a spotlight in the 2022 Parade, as he sang the new song "Seas the Adventure" with Mickey and Minnie.
