Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi is an animated action-fantasy-comedy series starring fictionalized versions of the Japanese pop-rock group Puffy AmiYumi as they travel from gig to gig while dealing with being typical teens with pop star personas. It was created by Sam Register and aired on Cartoon Network from November 19, 2004, to June 27, 2006, totalling three seasons and 39 episodes. During its run, the series was nominated for three Annie Awards.[1][2]
History with the Macy's Parade[]
Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi was represented by a float in the 2005 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, promoting the series and kicking off a holiday licensing and merchandising campaign headlined by Mattel.[3]
The float depicted Puffy AmiYumi’s tour bus—piloted by band manager Kaz—on a cross-country tour, arriving in New York City after gigs in London, Paris, Tokyo, Montreal, Athens, and Rio de Janeiro. On the roof of the bus, large puppets of Ami and Yumi rocked the scene with groovy guitars as bobblehead versions of the duo’s cats, Jeng Kan and Tekirai, tagged along on spare instruments. Surrounding the float were groupies dancing and singing along to a live performance of “Friends Forever” by the real Puffy AmiYumi at Macy’s Herald Square.
This float was only seen in the 2005 Parade, and it was disposed of shortly after it ended. Despite this, the guitars, and the figure of Kaz still survive at Macy's Parade Warehouse.
