The Hobo Clown is an original Macy's character who appeared in the form of a giant helium balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

History with the Macy's Parade

The Hobo Clown made its first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade appearance in 1949. The balloon took shape of a short, stubby circus clown wearing a green clown suit with white polka-dots and white cuffs with red lines, and a red party hat complete with the five-pointed white star, referencing the Macy's logo.

The balloon would continue to appear throughout the early 1950s. In 1953, the Hobo Clown balloon was given a repaint job, now bearing the logo for the 1952 circus film, "The Greatest Show on Earth". The balloon was retired shortly after this appearance and was disposed of some time later.

Though no recreation of the balloon has been made ever since, a cold-air version of the clown, sporting different colors, appeared on the Sour Patch Kids' Parade Day Mischief float in November 2017.
