The Jack O'Lantern is a giant helium Halloween balloon from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
History with the Macy's Parade
The Jack O'Lantern balloon made its first parade appearance in 1945, as one of five brand-new balloons in the lineup. The balloon featured a giant orange pumpkin with a spooky face carved -- or painted, rather -- on the front of the balloon. The balloon was briefly retired after the 1945 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, but later returned in 1947.
Months after its appearance in the 1947 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Jack O'Lantern balloon would travel across the country in January 1948 to appear in that year's edition of the March of Dimes Parade in Los Angeles, California. Five other parade balloons including the Panda Bear, The Goofy Gnome, The Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, The Pirate, and Officer PAL were inflated and floated down Wilshire Boulevard. The balloons were on loan to the crew of the Warner Brothers studios for this appearance. Since this appearance, the balloon has yet to make another appearance.
