Krazy Glue is a super-strong, fast-drying instant adhesive, that was introduced to the North American market in 1973. It is based on ethyl cyanoacrylate and has properties similar to other cyanoacrylate adhesives (commonly sold as "Crazy Glue" or "Super Glue").
History with the Macy's Parade[]
When original concepts of a Krazy Glue float were brought up by designer Joel Naprstek, there were much different designs planned in contrast with the float that would end up floating down the Parade route.
The first concept was entitled "Humpty Dumpty Had a Great Fall!". The float was based around the concept of all of the king's horses and all of the king's men having a tube of Krazy Glue on hand for when Humpty Dumpty has a great fall. The idea was eventually scrapped, possibly due to problems with getting the Humpty Dumpty animatronic effect to cooperate, so the concept was sent back to the drawing board.
A second concept, entitled "The Fix-It-Flyer Goes Barnstorming!", depicted a stunt plane -- pieced together with random household items, such as a plastic baseball bat as a fuselage, rulers for wings, paper clips for struts, frisbee wheels, a plastic straw axle, popsicle stick rear stabilizers/elevators, and a broken & glued China plate rudder, powered by a wind-up toy car -- flying through a barn and a pair of pylons. However, like the previous concept, this idea was omitted from development for unknown reasons, and the design team was once again sent back to the drawing board.
Eventually, Krazy Glue, Laura Duphiney, and the rest of the Parade Studio team decided on a final design - a funhouse float where everything was stuck in unexpected places with the help of Krazy Glue. The Fun House float stands at more than three stories tall and is a manifestation of the unbelievable things that are possible with Krazy Glue. Inside the funhouse, the main room rocks back and forth while a chandelier, piano, tables, and chairs are glued to the walls and ceiling.
Outside, life-sized cars attached by their roofs, piles of dishes stacked to unbelievable heights, and a tower of chairs glued together at odd angles wows spectators. Escorting the float is a party of carnival performers, including a strong man lifting a colossal weight over his head, acrobats demonstrating impossible gymnastic feats, and street artists balancing enormously tall stacks of plates and hats. This float was retired after the 2018 Parade.
Despite the float's retirement, its escorts were refurbished into the Funhouse Clowns in 2019.
