Lea Michele and the cast of Broadway's Funny Girl rehearse outside Macy's Herald Square on Monday, November 21st, 2022.
Every Thanksgiving week, Macy's shuts down 34th Street on Monday and Tuesday night to allow all of the large performance groups and talent to rehearse their chosen numbers. Nearly every talent ensemble, Broadway show, and celebrity performer make an appearance, save for those who are unable to do so as a result of scheduling conflicts. Beginning in 2023, select marching bands attended these rehearsals.
Rehearsals for the remaining marching bands begin at 3 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, and are ran through to allow the bands to get a feel of the broadcast area, and for the NBC telecast team to configure proper camera angles and audio mixing.
In 2020, rehearsals were only held on Monday night as filming for the reimagined event began the following morning. They returned to their normal schedule the following year.
