The Long Island Banjo Society was organized in 1963 as a non-profit band of men and women promoting "the preservation and entertainment of banjo playing". The Society performs with a variety of banjos (4 string tenor, 6 and 8 string), and back-up rhythm and bass instruments. They are mostly retired seniors who love to play the banjo and they represent a wide spectrum of professions, careers and interests spanning many decades. The Band frequently performs at various parks, historic sites, senior citizen facilities, fraternal meetings, and many charity functions. In the past, the Long Island Banjo Society has performed at popular venues and events such as the Schaefer Tent at Jones Beach, Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, Macy's Flower Show, Macy's 4th of July Fireworks Show, and have participated at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
