Since his debut in 1928’s Steamboat Willie, Mickey Mouse has become one of the most famous and recognizable cartoon characters in the world. Mickey is the mascot of the Walt Disney Company, appearing in the funny pages, in comic books, in over 130 theatrical films and shorts, and daily at Disney Parks around the world. Mickey’s popularity is especially apparent through his four unique Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon designs. The original Mickey Mouse balloon debuted in 1934, joined by his Disney contemporaries Horace Horsecollar, Pluto, a Little Pig, and the Big Bad Wolf. The following year, in an appropriately rain-soaked NYC, his foul-feathered friend Donald Duck debuted. Mickey was reintroduced as a balloon in 1971 in celebration of the Walt Disney World’s opening; this balloon appeared until 1983. He returned in 2000 as Bandleader Mickey in honor of his first color cartoon, The Band Concert. The fourth and most recent balloon—Sailor Mickey—sailed to 34th Street from 2009 until 2012.
