Mighty Mouse is an American animated anthropomorphic, superhero mouse character created by the Terrytoons studio for 20th Century Fox. The character first appeared in 1942 (originally named as Super Mouse) and subsequently in 80 theatrical films (shorts) between 1942 and 1961. These films also appeared on CBS during Saturday mornings from 1955 through 1967. The character was twice revived, by Filmation Studios in September 1979, and in 1987 by animation director Ralph Bakshi, who had worked at the Terrytoons studio during his early animation career.

History with the Macy's Parade

Mighty Mouse first appeared at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1951, to help gear up for his 10th Anniversary the following year. It features Mighty Mouse in a basic flying pose, making it seem as if he were flying down the parade route, and he's one of the few balloons who are designed to seem like flying. He made subsequent Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade appearances until 1956 when he was retired after an incident in Herald Square. He will most likely never return to the parade, as he is seen as outdated and unpopular in the eyes of many as well fade into obscurity. Despite his retirement, he has appeared multiple times as a walk around character.

Incidents

  • In 1954, The balloon's left arm was punctured at Times Square, Additionally, His right ear was deflated
  • In 1956, high winds reaching up to 45 mph has affected the entire parade route. The Mighty Mouse balloon would struggle along the parade march until the balloon handlers lost grip of him around Columbus Circle, causing him to crash into an obstacle and deflate rapidly. Despite this, the balloon somehow recovered from the accident, and made it to Herald Square. However, during his broadcast at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Mighty Mouse collapsed in front of the TV cameras. Because of this, he was officially removed from the line of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade march and retired shortly afterwards.
