Mother Ginger is a character from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's 2-act ballet play, The Nutcracker.

History with the Macy's Parade

Mother Ginger made her Macy's Parade debut in 2016, as a brand-new balloonicle. A live performer stood atop of the balloonicle, with the skirt of the dress being a driving compartment. In Herald Square, twelve other performers emerged from her skirt, recreating the famous scene from the play. This year was the only time she was ever seen in the main parade, although she did reappear in 2017 as a stilt walker. However, during the year of her debut, the balloonicle reappeared in the Macy's Holiday Parade in Universal Studios Orlando, but did not appear the following year due to the Parade's re brand as Universal's Holiday Parade Featuring Macy's.
