History with the Macy's Parade[]
Oscar Mayer made their Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade debut in 1984, with a star-spangled float known as "Salute to the Statue of Liberty". Designed by Manfred Bass and built by the magicians at the Macy's Parade Studio, the float's front featured an intricately-detailed statue of Lady Liberty, complete with her iconic torch and tabula ansata. Behind the lady in the water was a pirate ship (recycled from the Jolly Polly Pirate Ship) which carried a multitude of colored flags, and symbolized how immigrants sailed to America.
The float was retired after its sophomore appearance in the 1985 Parade. The bust of the Statue of Liberty was later used for the namesake float starting in 1986.
