The Panda Bear is a Macy's original character, who was featured as a giant helium balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
History with the Macy's Parade
The Panda Bear balloon made its Parade debut in 1946, having been recycled from the previous year's Teddy Bear balloon. The balloon features a panda of giant proportions sporting a blue ribbon around its neck. The balloon made its final appearance in the main Parade in 1947.
Months after his final appearance in the 1947 Parade, the Panda Bear balloon would travel across the country in January 1948 to appear in that year's edition of the March of Dimes Parade in Los Angeles, California. Five other balloons including The Pirate, The Goofy Gnome, The Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, the Jack O'Lantern and Officer PAL were inflated and floated down Wilshire Boulevard. The balloons were on loan to Warner Brothers for this appearance.
After this appearance, the Panda Bear balloon was given another coat of paint, returning the balloon to its former Teddy Bear-self for the 1949 Parade. Since then, the Parade has been without a Panda Bear balloon.
