The Pikachu Dance Performance, more widely known as the Dancing Pikachu Army, is a dance troupe consisting of large, inflatable costumes of the Pokémon Pikachu. The group made its first public appearance at Yokohama, Japan's "An Outbreak of Pikachu" summer event in 2014, where the troupe performed dances, marches, and took photographs with the attendees.[1] The group would later become viral throughout the mid-2010's, after a video of a performance gone wrong was uploaded to YouTube; in this video one of the inflatable Pikachu costumes can be seen deflating and later frantically tackled and pulled off stage.[2]
History with the Macy's Parade[]
The Pikachu Dance Performance made its Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade debut in the reimagined 2020 Parade. The group was selected to help kick-off the Pokémon franchise's year-long 25th anniversary celebration. For the group's performance on the Parade's NBC telecast, the several Pikachu were joined by an array of Pokémon trainers, all performing a choreographed dance number of the hallmark Pokémon theme song, Gotta Catch 'Em All!. The performance was rounded out by a reveal of the logo that will be used for the 25th anniversary celebrations, which featured the silhouette of Pikachu with the numbers 2 and 5 taking form as his red cheeks.
The performance was followed by the appearance of the multi-story tall Pikachu balloon, a separate article for which can be found here.
