Purina Dog Chow is a dog food brand.

History with the Macy's Parade[]

In 1983, Purina Dog Chow commissioned Macy's to craft the very first Great American Dog float, which would make it's debut into the Parade later that year. The float featured the dog Sparky next to a shoe in a checkerboard pattern. This float would make the standard 3 appearances, before being retired after the 1985 Parade.

The following year, the Great American Dog would get renamed to a small dog, as a brand new float was crafted for the 1986 Parade. This float featured another dog, as it would stand up. This float, like the previous incarnation was retired after 3 appearances, after it's appearance at the 1988 Parade.

After an absence from the 1989 Parade, the beloved American Dog would return to the Miracle on 34th Street in the 1990 Parade. This float, dubbed "Puppy Play", showed two dogs (Max and Patches) playing together with a moving red ball. This float wouldn't last long, as after the 1992 Parade, it was retired.

The Great American Small Dog would return to the parade after yet another absence since 1992 in the 1996 Parade. This float was pretty similar to the float from 1986, just a little smaller. This float, unlike the previous three, only made two appearances before being retired after the 1997 Parade.

Since 1998, Purina Dog Chow has had no units debut in the Parade.
