Super Grover is the superhero alter ego of Grover, a Muppet character from the popular children's television show Sesame Street. Grover is portrayed as a self-confident, lovable, and capable monster, boasting honesty and intelligence with a facility for self-deception. "Super Grover" is one of the character's many personas in the series; in this alternate identity, he tends to be more well-meaning than helpful, attempting to perform "dramatic" feats of strength or speed but often getting into a crash-landing or some other kind of comical predicament.

History with the Macy's Parade[]

The lovable blue monster's alter ego made his first Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade appearance back in 2003, joining 2 other famous Sesame Street characters, Big Bird and the lovable Muppet Kermit the Frog. Dressed in his dashing silver helmet, and long pink cape, Super Grover’s super status is further emphasized by the lightning bolt and capital G prominently displayed across his chest. Our hero takes his job so seriously, that he’s convinced himself he’s the one who’s saved the day (and the world) from imminent danger.

For the 2004 holiday season, Grover was selected to be Macy's Holiday Ambassador, with a special plush doll being sold at select Macy's stores and a cold-air inflatable being perched upon Macy's 34th Street marquee. This cold-air inflatable was later used as a decoration during the yearly runs of Macy's Holiday Parade from 2005 until 2015. During his second appearance in 2004, Super Grover led the fleet of giant balloons, pushing the Sesame Street float and Big Bird balloon into a later position. He made subsequent appearances in 2005 and 2006 to promote Global Grover. The balloon was retired after the 2006 Parade, along with Big Bird to make way for Abby Cadabby and the return of Kermit. Super Grover made 4 appearances in total.

Nearly four years after his last public appearance, the Super Grover balloon was used for a test flight in September of 2010 at Steven's Institute of Technology, alongside the second version of Cloe the Holiday Clown.

Trivia[]

  • Super Grover is the only Sesame Street character balloon to be a Macy's Holiday Ambassador.
  • The Super Grover balloon is also the only Sesame Street character to not follow or precede a Sesame Street float.
