The 32nd Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was held on November 27, 1958, in New York City starting at 9:45 a.m. and shown to viewers live on NBC that same day from 11 a.m. to noon. The lineup featured three giant helium balloons, 12 floats, marching bands from across the nation, and the one-and-only Santa Claus.

Trivia[]

  • A nationwide helium shortage meant balloons had to be filled with "plain air," and were carried along the Parade route by mobile derricks.
  • The Radio City Rockettes made their first appearance in the 1958 Parade.
  • Gorgeous Gobbler was unable to be carried by the cranes, and its appearance was scrapped.
  • The Popeye balloon was pulled from the lineup after its arm was punctured.
  • The Observer balloon was planned to appear in the 1958 Parade, but was immediately pulled before Parade day due to the balloons shape not able to cooperate with the cranes.
  • This is the Parade to have its newspaper ad illustrated by Walter Einsel, who continued to make them until 1977.
  • This procession marks the first year that Sammy Fidler composed the musical score for the Parade's broadcast. His music would be used until 1966, when the baton was passed to legendary Milton DeLugg.
