The 74th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade was held on November 23, 2000, in New York City and shown to viewers live on NBC that same day from 9 a.m. to noon EST. It was hosted by Katie Couric, Matt Lauer, and Al Roker. The lineup featured 15 giant helium balloons, 16 novelty balloons, 20 floats and falloons, seven toy floats, 14 marching bands, 11 special groups, a host of celebrity performers, and the one-and-only Santa Claus.

  • Arthur's left arm was punctured by trees along Central Park West.
  • Rocky (on the Rocky & Bullwinkle balloon) sprung a leak prior to Parade step-off. Jim Artle and Dany Jones of the Macy’s balloonatic team climbed a forklift and stitched Rocky into something resembling a backpack, leaving Bullwinkle to appear alone.[4]

Trivia[]

  • Jean McFaddin (executive producer since 1977) and Manfred Bass (lead designer since 1960) celebrated the 2000 Parade in a joint retirement. The two were presented with gifts for their many years of contributions at that year's Ribbon Cutting Ceremony; McFaddin received a pair of golden scissors, and Bass received a golden hammer.
  • Celebrities interviewed during the official broadcast's first hour included David Hasselhoff (Jekyll & Hyde), Marcella Lowery and Marissa Dyan (City Guys), John Ritter (The Dinner Party) and Michele Lee (The Tale of the Allergist's Wife).
  • NBC's telecast of the 2000 Macy's Parade was sponsored in-part by Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.
  • In a pre-Parade segment during the official broadcast, a computerized fly-through of New York City was created by the NASA Commercial Remote Sensing Program at NBC to outline the Parade route.
  • The 2000 Parade telecast on NBC won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Class Directing, and was also nominated for Outstanding Special Class Special (losing to Reel Models: The First Women of Film), and Outstanding Achievement in Live and Direct to Tape Sound Mixing (losing to a tie between Barney & Friends and Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?).[5]

  1. Due to Rocky deflating, only Bullwinkle appeared.
  2. The Mr. Snubelgrass costume experienced unknown difficulties and was sidelined near 59th Street and Columbus Circle.
  3. America Sings! joined the line of march after their opening number in Herald Square, rounding out the lineup with Santa Claus.
