Toothless is a fictional character and a main protagonist of the How To Train Your Dragon franchise, which is based on the novel series of the same name. The mythical dragon was once thought of as the "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself", however after befriending his Viking soulmate, Hiccup, he proves himself to be playful, inquisitive and intelligent. Toothless is the last known specimen of the Night Fury species, and commands respect from Vikings and dragons alike. Toothless has several special abilities, including shooting plasma with great accuracy from a long distance. When the plasma bounces off the nearby terrain and returns to Toothless, it gives him an accurate reading of his surroundings.

History with the Macy's Parade[]

Toothless made his Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade debut in the 2013 Parade. soaring down the streets of Manhattan as a breathtaking new balloon. The Toothless balloon debuted to promote the upcoming sequel to the original How To Train Your Dragon film, which was set to release the following summer. A feat of design by the magicians at Macy’s Parade Studio, Toothless measures approximately 72-feet in length and towers more than five stories above the ground. The color of midnight with glowing green eyes and an enigmatic grin, Toothless came to larger-than-life reality in grand form. Positioned with his giant wings folded in a landing pose, the Toothless balloon was a hit with fans young and old as he seems poised and ready to descend amongst the gathered crowds.

“As this clever and playful dragon takes his rightful place in the sky this year, millions of spectators along the streets of Manhattan and in homes across the country will be dazzled by Toothless,” said Amy Kule, former executive producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “His incredibly subtle coloring, bright eyes, enormous shape and scale promises to put Toothless in a class of his own among the Parade’s helium giants this Thanksgiving.”[1]

The Toothless balloon was crafted at the Raven Aerostar headquarters in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and once finished, measured 72 feet in length, 48-feet tall and was 36-feet wide.[2] The midnight-colored dragon was painted with a special black paint, which collects heat in order to properly conserve the helium-filled structure. If extended, the mystical Night Fury's wings would extend more than 70-feet across. Feeling at home, Toothless was always escorted on route to 34th Street by a group of Viking Clowns.

The Toothless balloon made subsequent appearances in the 2014 and 2015 Parades, promoting the television series, DreamWorks Dragons: Defenders of Berk. Following the 2015 procession, the Toothless balloon was temporarily retired from the line of march.

Toothless would soar to exciting new heights once more in the 2018 Macy's Parade. The 72-foot long Nighty Fury swooped down the 2.5-mile Parade route to promote the release of the third and final film in the franchise, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. The Toothless balloon was retired following this appearance, and was last seen deflated in the Balloon Studio at Macy's Parade Studio in November 2019.[3]
