A Dreidel is a four-sided spinning top that is used as a game during the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. Dreidels are Jewish variants of the spinning top toy. Each side bears a letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which can not only help Jewish kids study the Torah, but it is also used as a way of teaching the Hebrew alphabet.
History with the Macy's Parade[]
Trixie's Dreidel made its debut in the 2013 Parade, as a topsy-turvy balloonicle (a Macy's port-menteau of balloon and vehicle, which is a self-powered balloon vehicle). The debut of Trixie's Drediel celebrated the first time since 1888 that Thanksgiving fell on the first night of Hanukkah. Colored blue and stacked high upon a pile of gelt (gold coins), the special spinning dreidel balloonicle delights spectators as it spins its way down the parade route.
The Trixie's Dreidel balloonicle experienced difficulty along the route during its parade premiere. While spinning along Central Park West, the dreidel began to deflate and was sidelined to make repairs accordingly. The balloonicle ended up being surpassed by the rest of the line of march, however it would quickly catch up to its planned position in front of the Smurf Mushroom House falloon.
Following its appearance in the 2013 procession, the Trixie's Dreidel balloonicle was shipped to Universal Orlando Resort,[1] presumably for use in the Macy's Holiday Parade. The balloonicle did not end up appearing, however, and was shipped back to the Macy's Parade Warehouse in January 2017 as the rebranding of the Holiday Parade.
